Currently, the common-rail injection system is under development as the key technology to reducing the environmental burden of diesel engines. The system requires the injection of minimal fuel drops into a combustion room and multi-staged injection to ensure complete combustion.

Toshiba Materials offers silicon nitride ceramic check balls with high abrasion resistance and high stiffness to realize the above combustion.

Namely, the ceramic parts are applied to two parts. One is the check bulb parts of the common rail to maintain fuel at high pressure over 1600 atm. and the other is the bulb parts to control the multi-staged fuel injection within one thousandth of a second.
