Security checking and inspection; an expanded industrial application of scintillators

Toshiba Materials offers optical materials applied products such as intensifying screens, inorganic EL panels and back-lights for medical use or displaying elements. Scintillator is one of these optical materials applied products and it converts X-ray energy into light. Toshiba Materials has developed and commercialized GOS (Gd2O2S: Pr) scintillator to substitute the conventional CWO (CdWO4) scintillator which contains environmentally hazardous cadmium. Our GOS scintillator has agreeable properties other than environmental friendliness. It has high sensitivity, short after glow and high X-ray resistance, and serves as the key elements in high-speed scanning of X-ray tomography, high resolution imaging devices and minimum possible exposure X-ray photography in medical field.

Toshiba Materials is aiming at expanding industrial application of scintillators base on our process designing technology established by materials designing technology and understanding of optical properties of scintillators obtained in the medical application field. Namely, scintillators for various X-ray inspection systems for traveller's baggage at airport and seaport, smuggling goods, illegal entry and exit, foreign substances in food and defects in complicated structures.

Our scintillators help you to have high resolution X-ray detection designing, high-speed baggage checking by fast scanning, serviceable life elongation of X-ray tubes and down-sizing of scattering X-ray equipments by smaller amount of shielding materials. Figures 1 and 2 show detection examples by scintillators. They enable both see-through (Fig. 1) and scanning 2D and 3D fine checking (Fig. 2) even when the object is moving.

Problem

Conventional CWO (CdWO4) scintillators imposed limitation on X-ray detection part designing and device development in addition to the environmental issues. Environmentally friendly scintillators were wanted.

Solution

Our scintillators contains no cadmium and have agreeable properties such as good machinability of both cutting and grinding, high sensibility and short after glow. All these properties mean that they are the best fit scintillators for high-resolution X-ray non-destructive inspection equipments.
